Group: Arab-Hebrew Theatre / Israel
In the production by the Israeli director and actor Dori Engel, the two hostile families of the Capulets and the Montagues, and thus also the two main roles, are portrayed by 10 Palestinian and Jewish actors. Against the backdrop of what is probably the best-known love story in world literature, impressive associations are made with the ongoing conflict in the region, without current politics itself becoming the ostensible subject of the tragedy. The result is an impressively sustained performance.
The Arabic and Hebrew texts are inserted as subtitles in German translation, which is financed for these guest performances by the Goethe-Institut in Tel Aviv. After all performances, the guests from Tel Aviv will be available to the audience for conversation.
On the occasion of the »Theaterwelten« festival, Württembergische Landesbühne Esslingen is showing “Romeo and Juliet”, a production by the Arab-Hebrew Theatre from TEL Aviv – Jaffa. Tickets are now on sale at the WLB box office (phone 0711/968804110). Tickets already purchased remain valid.
